Professor Heather Smith and Environmental Sciences major Sierra Matteson recently returned from Jerusalem where they were team members of the 2019 UNC Charlotte Mount Zion Archeological Dig (https://digmountzion.uncc.edu/). Each year, UNC Charlotte students have the opportunity to join the dig through summer study abroad. This year, Dr. Smith was a member of the faculty team and Sierra joined 23 other students in a program that combined academic and field study of Jerusalem in both its modern and historical contexts, and participation in the archeological excavation.  Stories of this season's extraordinary finds are now making the rounds of international media -  See: https://www.timesofisrael.com/first-evidence-of-crusader-siege-from-july-15-1099-uncovered-at-old-city-walls/ and https://arstechnica.com/science/2019/07/archaeologists-uncover-evidence-of-first-crusades-siege-of-jerusalem/
