Background:  My interest in the history of human-landscape interaction stems from an innate curiosity about the past and its influence on the present. I spent my childhood clambering through historic ruins at the margins of my hometown in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State. Since then, I have worked as an applied environmental anthropologist and an archaeologist in Arizona and Wyoming. I am interested not only in understanding how people have both succeeded and failed in their efforts to gain a livelihood from the earth, but also the lessons and the legacies they leave us with.
